What´s happening to NIOD?

This was spotted on Nicola Kilner´s (CEO of Deciem) Instagram Page.

What is happening with NIOD? Do we have anything new coming? It seems NIOD is finally getting the spotlight, and this event looked amazing. Hopefully, we will see something new, but if not, it´s nice to see NIOD up there. NIOD is a great brand that doesn´t always get the love it deserves.

NIOD Event

The Panel At NIOD Event

The panel consisted of Nicola Kilner, CEO and Co-Founder of Deciem.

Steven Bartlett from Diary of a CEO interviewed Nicola Kilner on his very popular podcast and featured on Dragon´s Den.

Nafisah Abdalla, Deciem´s Science Communications Manager, is someone you may have seen in some of the social media videos.

Sarah Ann Macklin, who I have never heard of, is the founder of The Be Well Collective.

The Ordinary in Vogue´s Beauty Index

Vogue Says:In the second edition of the Vogue Business Beauty Index, The Ordinary maintains its top spot with a continued perception of quality, effectiveness and value for money, as well as a high regard for its sustainable practices in the eyes of consumers. L’Oréal’s dermocosmetics powerhouses La Roche-Posay and Cerave climb the ranks to second and third position, respectively, with strong advertising campaigns elevating their digital scores. Estée Lauder Acquisition is Complete

June 2024—This month, Estée Lauder Companies announced that it had completed the acquisition of Deciem, The Ordinary & NIOD.

While this seems to surprise many newbies to The Ordinary & NIOD, Estée Lauder has been involved with Deciem since 2017.

Since Estée Lauder´s involvement, there have been huge improvements. There were times when products were out of stock for months, and since Estée Lauder’s involvement, that hasn´t been the case, and some countries with stricter laws can now enjoy products they never could before.

I see the same old comments on Social Media, people hating Estée Lauder; it´s like there´s a script everyone copies and pastes everywhere. Mostly, the comments are about prices rising, and they have. But haven´t prices risen everywhere on everything?

Many products have been discontinued over the last few months, and everyone blames Estée Lauder for this, which may be the case. But what would you do if a product isn´t as popular as others, ingredients are too hard to source, or it´s not making money?

Discontinued Products

The Ordinary currently have a page called “Fond Farewell” where you can find all the latest products being discontinued. If you love them, run, don´t walk! I´m so happy that the majority of these aren´t my favourites, but I am very upset to see the Silicone Primer leave us. It´s the only primer I have used since 2017, and I have no idea which one to try once this goes forever.

LATEST NEWS!

Early this year, The Ordinary announced the discontinuation of some of its products. A few weeks ago, more products were added to the “Fond Farewell” page, some of which were a little surprising, including “B” Oil, Niacinamide Powder, Ethylated Ascorbic Acid and The Ordinary Primers. There were 10 products (see below) on the Fond Farewell page and the #deciemaddicts weren´t happy.

Then, The Ordinary sends out an email about Vitamin C, and Ethylated Ascorbic Acid is there as if it´s not being discontinued. The members of the Facebook Group were quick to notice this, and it seems some products that were on the “Fond Farewell” page have now been removed and are fully available again.

The 5 Products Currently On The “Fond Farewell” Page.

The Ordinary Products that were added to the “discontinued page” but now removed and available.

  • High Silicone Primer
  • High-Spreadability Primer
  • Ethylated Ascorbic Acid
  • “B” Oil
  • Niacinamide Powder

The Ordinary is discontinuing more products

Earlier this year, The Ordinary announced 5 products that will be discontinued and this week we have seen 5 more products added to the list of products being discontinued.

The Ordinary Products Discontinued

These are the products that are being discontinued by The Ordinary. If you use these products, this is your warning to run, not walk and buy before they go forever! If any of the products mentioned below are not on the list, then they have finally gone, forever.

These 5 products were added to the discontinued page and then removed and fully available.

The Ordinary Discontinues 5 Products

The Ordinary has just announced that it will be discontinuing 5 products from The Ordinary brand. These include The Ordinary Sea-Buckthorn Fruit Oil, Chia Seed Oil, Vitamin C Suspension 30%, Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane and Borage Oil.

For anyone who loves and uses these, I´m sure you will be sad. It´s so hard when a product you love is discontinued, but there will be alternatives you can try. I´m quite happy that none of these are my favourites; The Sea-Buckthorn Fruit Oil was too messy for me. I prefer Squalane Oil or Rosehip over Chia Seed Oil or Borage and prefer to use Retinoid without Squalane as I love to use the oil separately.

Out with the old & in with the new

As some products are discontinued, this makes space for newness, and we have seen lots of newness this year including The Ordinary Retinal 0.2%, Balancing & Clarifying Serum, Milky Toner and the new Lip Balm. Make sure you sign up for the Deciem Chat Room Newsletter for all the latest news.

Buy Whilst Stock Lasts

If you love these products, I would advise buying them whilst you can although take into account the shelf life and period after opening. Buy products directly at The Ordinary, in-stores at one of the many authorised stockists online. You can find more information and reviews on all these products below.

Alternatives To These 5 Discontinued Products

Sea-Buckthorn Fruit Oil, Chia Seed Oil, Borage Oil & B Oil > The Ordinary Oils

Vitamin C Suspension 30% & Ethylated Ascorbic Acid > The Ordinary Vitamin C

Retinoid 2% in Squalane > Retinoid 2% & Retinoid 5% in Squalane

Other Brands & Products That Have Been Discontinued

  • Hemi-Squalane
  • The Ordinary Foundations
  • The Ordinary Concealers
  • Shop – The Fragrance
  • Hylamide
  • The Chemistry Brand
  • Abnomaly

This product launched on May 7th 2024, at 9am EST! On May the 3rd, The Ordinary released this video. They said it began with the letter “S” and was something “Milky”. The Ordinary then revealed the product a day early.

The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion

Unless you´re a member of the Facebook Group, follow The Ordinary Social Media, or are on Reddit, you may not know that a brand new product was leaked!

One of our members spotted something on Social Media a few weeks ago and posted it in the Facebook Group, which was also leaked on Reddit. So, with the big secret out, The Ordinary posted about the new product.

New The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion

It is The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion

This new product is due March 12th, and you can sign up for the new The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% emulsion now!

New Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid with Ceramides

This month, we saw the release of the first new formulation of 2024. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 is now a new, improved formula, including an extra form of Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides for extra hydration and a less sticky formula than the original Hyaluronic Acid.

New Ordinary Products 2024

New Ordinary Products 2024

There are a few new Ordinary products coming in 2024, and I think you´re going to love them! The first product was The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid reformulation with Ceramides, which is much nicer than the original version.

The second new Ordinary product which we now know is the Retinal 0.2% is coming on the 12th March. I have tried it, and it is a really nice formulation.

The other new Ordinary products in the pipeline are fabulous, and I can´t wait for them to be launched. I think you will be quite surprised because they are quite different to other products from The Ordinary.

New Ordinary Product Coming Soon

No, it´s not another oil!

When new products are announced, many comments are, “Please not another oil” 😂. I will confirm that none of the new products are oils 😊.

Discontinued Products 2024

To make room for new products, sadly, some products have been discontinued. You can find all discontinued products here.

Website Changes

Good changes are coming! When you change countries at the bottom of the Ordinary website, you will see that languages are coming too! So far, it´s just in French.

It is always such an honour to see The Ordinary Facebook Group featured in the press. This week, Nicola Kilner, CEO of The Ordinary, talked to Glossy about The Ordinary Facebook Group and the new Hyaluronic Acid formulation.

The Ordinary Facebook Group Featured in Glossy

In November 2023, I received a wonderful email from The Ordinary. I had to read it quite a few times to take it all in as I couldn´t quite believe what I was reading. I had been invited to The Ordinary HQ in Toronto along with some of the members of The Ordinary Facebook Group.

Just visiting HQ would have been more than enough, but this was even more special. We would see and hear about a brand new formation that wouldn´t be available for another 3 months.

The Ordinary opened its doors for the first in-person event, and we were invited! It was such a fantastic day. We got to meet the geniuses behind the products. We then had a tour around the labs and watched the product being made. After the labs, there were canapes, drinks and socializing. It was wonderful meeting some of the members of the Facebook Group.

A regimen station was set up for members of the group to get help with their skincare routine, and we all left with lots of goodies, including a gorgeous The Ordinary bag. It was a day we will never forget. You can read all about the In-Person Event here.

The Ordinary Facebook Group Glossy

The Ordinary’s community includes its 2.3 million followers on Instagram ,1.5 million TikTok followers, and self-started communities. On Facebook, the independent The Ordinary & Deciem Chat Room group, which dates back to 2017, has over 200,000 members. “It’s incredible — people just sharing their regimens and advice and answering each other’s questions,” Kilner said.

Once the formula had been adjusted, the brand invited 48 members of its local community in its Toronto headquarters to take part in a “Listening Lab” event on December 2. The goal of the event was to celebrate its community and give top supporters in Toronto the chance to try the new formulation before anyone else. The majority of the group was Toronto-based customers with personal relationships with team members in the brand’s local stores. The group also included the founding and managing members of the aforementioned Facebook group.

The Ordinary Press Release for the New Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid & Ceramides

The Ordinary just launched the new, updated formulation of their best-selling product, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, to include ceramides.

New The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid & Ceramides

The Ordinary have just launched the NEW, UPDATED FORMULATION of their BEST-SELLING PRODUCT, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. They listened to the feedback of their community and they heard what the #deciemaddicts had to say. “The Hyaluronic Acid is gloopy”. “The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid is sticky”.

Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid + Ceramides

A warm welcome to The New Hyaluronic Acid + B5 + Ceramides.

The Ordinary took on board all the comments from their community, including all the feedback in the Deciem Chat Room, and decided to improve it. The new Hyaluronic Acid + B5 now includes ceramides for lipid barrier support. They have added an extra form of Hyaluronic Acid, which now has 5 forms. The new formula provides instant plumping and hydration, giving softer, smoother, healthy-looking skin. It promotes skin suppleness and elasticity and minimizes the appearance of fine, dry lines. Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid is excellent for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

New Hyaluronic Acid + Ceramides

  • New non-sticky formula
  • Lightweight texture
  • 5 forms of Hyaluronic Acid
  • Ceramides for lipid barrier support
  • Provides hydration across multiple layers of the surface of the skin
  • Instant plumping
  • Instant hydration
  • Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin

How to use the new Hyaluronic Acid

Apply as per the original Hyaluronic Acid. After cleansing, apply to damp or dry skin, then follow with your oils and moisturizers.

My thoughts on the new Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

You can instantly see and feel the difference as you compare the new Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 & Ceramides alongside the original version. The latest version is much more lightweight, and the way it drops from the pipet is so much smoother, quicker and not gloopy like the original version can be. It feels silkier on the skin and absorbs really well. It´s undoubtedly more hydrating and leaves skin feeling and looking plumper. It´s definitely an improved formula!

The Deciem Event

It’s been so hard keeping this quiet! Back in November, some members of the Facebook Group and I were invited to The Ordinary HQ in Toronto for the first in-person event ever. This was what the event was about – launching the brand new Hyaluronic Acid + B5 + Ceramides formula.

It was such a fantastic experience to visit HQ. It was such an honour to be invited and an even more tremendous honour to share this incredible moment with the fabulous members of the Facebook Group. Read more about the first in-person event at The Ordinary.

Deciem held its VERY FIRST IN-PERSON EVENT at HQ

Earlier this month, Deciem hosted its very first in-person event at HQ Toronto and some Facebook Group Members & Deciem Chat Room had this unique opportunity of attending.

First In-Person Event At Deciem HQ

A few weeks ago, I received a wonderful email from Deciem saying that they would love to invite some Toronto-based Facebook Group Members and myself to their very first in-person event at HQ, revealing a brand-new product.  The Facebook Group buzzed, and before we knew it, the event was fully booked.

Deciem HQ Toronto

The DECIEM HQ Entrance

The Deciem Invite To Facebook Group Members

The Ordinary is hosting its very first in-person event at its Toronto HQ on Saturday 2nd December, and would love to see Toronto-based members of the group there. During the event, you will hear about a new product launching next year and get to speak to the scientists who create the formulas.

First In-Person Deciem Event

The First In-Person Event Saturday, December 2nd at Deciem HQ, Toronto

I rolled up at Deciem HQ with Tracy, one of the Facebook Group moderators, at 1pm. The HQ blew us away from the get-go—it’s big and sleek, and the product design vibes are everywhere.  The building is enormous and stunning in each and every way you look.  The Deciem look and feel is everywhere.

We were escorted upstairs to where the event was taking place, which had been designed and set up especially for this event, and once again, the design, layout & presentation were beautiful, with super stylish black and white sofas.

After mingling and meeting some of the Deciem team and the fabulous members of the Facebook Group, we all took a place in our comfy seats, and each of us had a cute white The Ordinary bag. No peeking allowed—yet.

The Chit-Chat about the Mystery Product

First In-Person Deciem Event

On the panel were 4 members of staff from Deciem, including Prudvi, Chief Scientific Officer and Rita, Science Communications Manager, who you may have seen in The Ordinary & NIOD Videos on Instagram & Tik Tok.

The panel talked in depth about the new product, and finally, we were allowed to open our bags.  I cannot tell you what the new product is but what I can say is that there were a lot of impressed sounds in the room. I have been using it for a few weeks now, and it´s become an everyday staple in my skincare routine.

The panel’s talk about the new product was incredibly insightful, they tackled some of our tough questions and also asked the audience some questions too.

One question was “How did we hear about The Ordinary?”

It was so wonderful listening and watching people as they answered this question.  The same excited look on people’s faces when they talked about when they first heard about The Ordinary and receiving their first products.

Inside The Lab

After the product talk, it was lab time.  We suited up in the lab jackets and watched the scientists whip up the new formula.  It´s set to hit the shelves in 2024.  Even the labs are super sleek in Deciem style.

This is the new formula being made and will be available in 2024.

Post-Lab Hangout: Snacks, Chats, and TikTok Fun

Back in the main area, there were canapes and drinks.  There was a regimen stand for skincare questions, and everyone left with a bag full of products and more guidance on using the products.

At the TikTok studio, guests from the event recorded and shared their The Ordinary stories.  If this content is ever used, I can guarantee these are just regular people and not actors. They were amazing.

Meeting the Members of The Facebook Group

There was a huge timeline wall at The Ordinary event, and seeing this at the end of the timeline, made this event even more special.  It was the first in-person event at Deciem HQ.

First In-Person Deciem Event

Receiving an invitation to Deciem’s first-ever in-person event was a true honour, and being able to share this moment with members of the Facebook Group was an even greater privilege. We enjoyed an amazing day with our favourite skincare brand.

My Visit To Deciem HQ & Factory

Apart from the first IN-Person Event, I had 4 amazing days in Toronto with Deciem. I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of the Deciem team and seeing what goes on behind the scenes of our favourite little 30ml bottles.  I came away thinking, “How do they sell it at these prices?”.  The amount of work that goes on behind our cute 30ml bottles is mindblowing.

Watch my quick Instagram Film showcasing the entire trip, where I had the chance to chat with the Deciem team. I also got to explore the factory where our products are crafted and packed (no footage of this, sadly).

I’ve been a huge fan of Deciem and the products from when I discovered The Ordinary in 2017. Since my visit, my love for them has only grown stronger.

Skin Streaming is the latest skincare trend all over Social Media. So what is it and what do you need to buy? Well, it´s nothing new, and you don´t need to purchase anything! Let’s talk about Skin Streaming The Ordinary.

But what is skin streaming?

I´d love to tell you it´s something brand new and unique. But there is nothing new about it except the name. We´ve had “Skin Flooding” and now it´s “Skin Streaming”. Skinstreaming = streamlining your skincare routine. That´s all it is, and it shouldn´t cost you a penny to get on board the new skincare trend.

You could also say “simple, minimalistic, quick or easy skincare routine”, but “skin streaming” sounds better.

Do only what is absolutely necessary!

Skin Streaming The Ordinary

The regimens are pretty streamlined or “skin streaming” if you have used The Ordinary Regimen Builder. The Ordinary has many products, but they only recommend 2 or 3 products when it comes to regimens. They will give you a cleanser, a treatment serum and a moisturizer. That´s it. Depending on your skin, you could skip the treatment and cleanse and moisturize.

The Ordinary Regimen Builder – For Signs of Ageing

I have added some details to The Ordinary Regimen Builder, which is the regimen. Squalane Cleanser – Multi-Peptide & Copper Peptides followed by Natural Moisturizing Factors. During the day, you need to add an SPF.

Skin Streaming The Ordinary

Skin Streaming The Ordinary

Over the years, we´ve gone from Cleanse – Tone – Moisturize to sometimes 15-step skincare routines. How anyone has the time and patience to do this twice a day, I don´t know.

I´m always skin streaming and always with The Ordinary or NIOD, as these are the only 2 brands I ever use.

My skincare routines vary, but I will cleanse and moisturise on lazy days.

The Ordinary Regimens

Whatever your main skin concern is, use the product that directly targets that after cleansing. For example, if oil/sebum is your main concern, cleanse and add Niacinamide.

If hydration is your main concern, cleanse and add hyaluronic, marine hyaluronic, or amino acids.

For signs of ageing, add Multi-Peptide Serum + HA after cleansing, followed by a moisturizer.

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser > Niacinamide > Natural Moisturizing Factors + BetaGlucan

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser > Hyaluronic Acid > Natural Moisturizing Factors

Squalane Cleanser > Glycolic Acid > Moisturize

Glycolipid Cream Cleanser > Retinol/Retinoid > Moisturize

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser > Salicylic Acid > Moisturize

The Ordinary Skin Streaming Sets

You can buy numerous sets and collections from The Ordinary that are literally skin-streaming. The Daily Set comes with a cleanser, hyaluronic acid and a moisturizer.

The Balance Set by The Ordinary is another lovely, simple, minimalist set perfect for those trying to target blemish-prone skin. It comprises a cleanser, niacinamide, a moisturizer and a masque to use once or twice a week.

The Cleanser Discovery Set

The Ordinary Cleansers

Cleansers are so important and it can take time to find right cleanser for you. By buying this set, you can discover all the different cleansers available and then decide which one you like. You might even like all three! You can read more about all The Ordinary Cleansers here

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

This comes in a 50ml and also 150ml. The 150ml is better value but the 50ml is great when travelling hand luggage only. The Squalane Cleanser needs to be massaged between the palms of your hands until the consistency changes. Depending on how this is stored and the heat of your hands, it could take 5 seconds or for me up to 30 seconds. Read more about The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser here.

The Ordinary Glucoside Foaming Cleanser

This is currently available in 150ml except when purchased in a set. I love this cleanser. It works fast and leaves my skin feeling and looking fresh, clean and bright. It’s not for everyone though. Some people find it drying. If you buy the set, you get to try them all for yourself and see which one you prefer. Read all about The Ordinary Glucoside Foaming Cleanser here.

The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser

This is currently available in 150ml online but 50ml when purchasing this set. Glycolipid Cream Cleanser is also a really nice cleanser and just like the Glucoside Foaming Cleanser. This gets to work straight away removing all make-up. I have some people double-please using Squalane Cleanser followed by this and this or the Glucoside Foaming Cleanser. Cleansers are such a personal choice and you need to try different ones to see which ones you enjoy using and which ones work for your skin.

Choosing which acid to buy is so confusing, so hopefully, this list of the most popular acids will help you decide.

You can find the link to the original poll below and add your own votes and comments.

The Best Ordinary Acids Voted By The Deciem Addicts

No. 1 The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA

Deciem says: Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) exfoliate the skin’s topmost surface for a brighter and more even appearance. Beta hydroxy acids (BHA) also exfoliate the skin with an extended function to help clear pore congestion. This combined 32% AHA/BHA solution offers deeper exfoliation to help fight visible blemishes and improve skin radiance. The formula also improves the appearance of skin texture and reduces the look of fine lines with continued use.

No. 2 The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

    best ordinary acids

Deciem says: Glycolic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 7% toning solution offers mild exfoliation for improved skin radiance and visible clarity. The formula also improves the appearance of skin texture with continued use.

No. 3 The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10%

    Lactic Acid 10%
    Lactic Acid 10%

Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 10% formulation offers mild exfoliation and is supported with a purified Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity that are often associated with exfoliation.

No. 4 The Ordinary Azelaic Acid

Deciem says: Found in grains, Azelaic Acid is produced naturally by yeast that lives on normal skin. It brightens the skin tone while visibly improving the evenness of skin texture and reducing the look of blemishes. It is a multi-functional support ingredient for all skin types and acts as an effective antioxidant.

No. 5 The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2%

Deciem says: Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 2% treatment solution helps exfoliate the inside walls of pores to fight the appearance of blemishes and for better visible skin clarity with continued use.

No. 6 The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% – not available

    Alpha Lipoic
    Alpha Lipoic

Deciem Says: Alpha Lipoic Acid is a highly potent antioxidant and can restore a renewed skin appearance, improving visible skin texture and tone when applied topically. This formulation uses an exceptionally high 5% concentration of high-purity Alpha Lipoic Acid.

No. 7 The Ordinary Mandelic Acid

    Best Ordinary Acids
    Mandelic Acid

Mandelic Acid 10% + HA offers superficial dermal peeling gentler than other alpha hydroxy acids. The molecular weight of mandelic acid is 152.1 daltons which is larger than other alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid is 76.0 daltons, for example). This larger size allows mandelic acid to penetrate the skin more slowly which in turn makes it very gentle and suitable for all skin types.

No. 8 The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5%

    Best Acids The Ordinary
    Lactic Acid 5%

Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 5% formulation offers very mild exfoliation and is supported with a purified Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity that is often associated with exfoliation.

No. 9 The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque

Salicylic Acid, 2% Masque, is formulated to target lacklustre tone and textural irregularities. The formula, infused with charcoal and clays, aims to enhance the appearance of smoothness and clarity, leaving the skin feeling refreshed.

We all make mistakes, and here are the top 10 The Ordinary Skincare Mistakes.

If you have just heard about The Ordinary, I bet you´re really excited and just want to order one of everything because it all looks so cheap. Before you do, here are the top 10 The Ordinary mistakes many of us make. Reading this will save you time, money, and stress.

    1. Not Asking For A Regimen

If you’re new to The Ordinary & Deciem or skincare in general, I highly advise you to ask Deciem for a personalized routine. If you do not purchase a complete regimen, you will end up with lots of products that can´t be used together. Honestly, it will save you time, money, and a lot of stress. You could also have a look at some of these Ordinary Skincare Routines.

    2. Thinking it’s all so cheap & buying too much

When you first hear about The Ordinary, you get so excited and start throwing these cute little black and white boxes into your basket because it all looks so cheap. Before you know it, you’ve spent more on skincare than you ever have. Ask for a regimen! You don´t need them all, and your skin won´t thank you for all these new ingredients being thrown at it.

    3. Conflicting Products

Lots of The Ordinary products have conflicts, and many people do not read the regimen page or instructions on The Ordinary website before buying or, worse, using them. Don´t buy too many from each category or too many actives, especially if you´re new to all this.

    All these products have conflicts

    4. Not Patch Testing & Rushing In – The Ordinary Skincare Mistakes

You should patch-test, but the truth is that the majority of people do not. I ran a poll on Instagram, and it was something like 85% didn´t bother. As long as you don´t have a reaction or break out, no problem.

If you pile on all the products in one go and break out, you will have no idea which product caused it. Patch-test and introduce the products slowly.

    5. Less Is More

We see lots of Instagrammers and members using tons of products in one routine. You really don´t need them all. The late Brandon Truaxe, founder of Deciem, always said less is more. Let the products do their job.

    6. Not Sticking To A Routine – The Ordinary Skincare Mistakes

It´s really important to stick to your routine for a good few weeks to see results. Be patient and be consistent. Many people get excited, buy way too many products and then want to use them all. Stick to a routine!

    7. Not using a good SPF or staying out of the direct sun.

You can use all the products you wish, but unless you invest in a really good sun cream and stay out of the direct sun, you´ll be wasting your money.

    8. Over-Planning Routines

I often see members really planning their routines on some amazing spreadsheets, Monday to Sunday, AM & PM. It´s great to plan, but you may be disappointed. You might find you get irritation with certain products. Some products might cause products to pill. Maybe the products in your am routine do not sit well under makeup, or you’re finding the products are not absorbing well. Don’t over-plan and then be disappointed.

    9. Do not underestimate The Ordinary

Some of these products are really strong, and we have seen some members with some really bad reactions. If a product says “not to be used on compromised skin”, then do not use on compromised skin, or if it says “avoid direct sun”, then avoid direct sun. If a product says “avoid eyes”, then please avoid the eyes, especially when using/rinsing off the AHA 30%. Some of these products can make your skin sensitive to the sun, and you do not want to be adding melasma or pigmentation to your list of skin concerns if it’s not there already.

    10. Not Reading The Basics – The Ordinary Skincare Mistakes

Read the instructions for each product. Look at the regimen page. Read and learn, and if you still don´t understand, come and join the Facebook Group and chat with the Deciem Addicts.

    Finally- The Ordinary Skincare Mistakes

The Ordinary & Deciem Chat Room was created because I was totally addicted. The Ordinary is an amazing brand and has given everyone the opportunity to try ingredients that were never available before.

The skincare community on Facebook and Instagram is fantastic. Enjoy your new skincare journey, read, learn, and don´t be scared to ask questions. You never know where your new skincare journey will take you.

Does it drive you mad when The Ordinary is pilling/flaking? You apply all your products, and then suddenly you have bits coming off. This is the product pilling.

Some quick tips on how to prevent skincare products from pilling/flaking/balling-up

    • Use less product
    • Make sure each product is completely absorbed
    • Reduce the number of products in each routine
    • Pat rather than rub

    The Ordinary & Skincare Pilling/Flaking/Balling-Up

You’ve cleansed and prepped your skin, and you´re ready to start layering all your products. You start with The Ordinary Buffet, followed by Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide and Natural Moisturising Factors. You go to apply your SPF and makeup, and suddenly you have these disgusting, manky bits hanging off your skin like you haven´t washed in months.

It’s not your skin, don’t panic! It’s not dirt, either. It’s The Ordinary product pilling. I used to get this a lot, and one company, (not Deciem) told me it was my skin and that it had to adjust to the products. I knew it wasn´t my skin.

Skincare product/pilling/balling-up feels horrible, and unless you’re going to bed or happy to live with the bits, you have to start your routine all over.

    What Causes Product Pilling?

    • Using too much product
    • Not allowing each layer to absorb fully before applying the next
    • Using too many products in your routine
    • Mix of ingredients
    • Make sure the foundation of your skin is good. Cleansed and exfoliated.

What can I do to stop The Ordinary pilling/flaking?

    1. Use less of the product. If you are using 3 drops, use 1 or 2.
    2. Apply the product to your face and make sure it is completely absorbed into your skin before applying the next product.
    3. You can try patting rather than rubbing but still make sure each layer is fully absorbed.
    4. Use fewer products in your routine. Less is more.
    5. Make sure you layer your products in the correct order.
    6. There´s no set time to wait between layers, but if you can find something to do like read a page of your book, then go do that.

The Ordinary products I personally found pilled badly.

How did I fix my pilling?

    • I used a lot less product. Obviously, we all have different size faces. I have a small face and really only needed 2 drops.
    • Cut down the number of products I was using in one routine.
    • I really love Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution and Azelaic Acid but they did pill so I would use these alone. Yes, it´s ok to apply just one product!
    • I patted the product in and waited a minute or 2 before applying other products.

Morning Routine Pilling/Flaking Makeup & Sun Cream

During the day, if I was going to be applying suncream and makeup, I would use a minimal amount of skincare products. Skincare, suncream, primer and foundation were just too much. I personally hated the feeling of it all during the day, so sometimes I would just use one serum and then really concentrate on my evening routine.

You don’t always have to layer!

We see lots of Instagrammers and members in the Facebook Group with their extensive routines. Cleansers – exfoliate – hydration mist – 3 serums -eye cream – antioxidant – retinol and moisturiser. The truth is you do not need to use all these products, and your skin can only tolerate so much. Less is more.

The Ordinary Rosacea Q&A – Deciem Chat Room

Debbie Thomas from the D.Thomas Clinic London joined us in The Ordinary & Deciem Chat Room Facebook Group for a Q&A all about Rosacea.

Rosacea is an incredibly interesting topic and skin condition, which I think many people may have but don’t even realise. If you have a lot of redness, rosy cheeks, flushing, and visible blood vessels in your face, this could be Rosacea, along with many other symptoms. It may come and go and certain times and can be set off due to stress, food, drink and many other factors.

If you think there’s a possibility you have Rosacea, try to speak to someone. Try to keep a diary of what you eat, drink, do or use that could possibly have triggered your Rosacea. Everyone’s skin is different, so it’s important to really get to know yours and what is making it react.

Read all about rosacea & The Ordinary products.

The Rosacea Q&A with Debbie Thomas

How can you tell if you have Rosacea?

Rosacea is normally diagnosed by a doctor (dermatologist) as a clinical condition. The symptoms most commonly associated with rosacea are being very prone to flushing, developing small broken veins in the areas you flush, and the skin feeling tingly, itchy and uncomfortable. Some people will also see spots coming up in the area, these can be small rash-like bumps or bigger more solid painful lumps which don’t seem to have anything in them.

When you have had rosacea for many years, you will notice the flushing becoming more prominent (stays for longer), and all the other symptoms become more evident. It is most common on the nose and cheeks but can be on any face area. Ladies with lighter skin tones aged 35-65 seem to be the most susceptible. However, it can affect anyone. ” – Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A.

Since developing rosacea, some skin on my nose has turned a slightly purplish. I am worried I will end up with rhinophyma. Is this inevitable?

No, not at all. It would be a texture change that could indicate you’re susceptible to rhinophyma rather than colour. The skin thickens and takes on a waxy feel. It sounds like you have some slightly larger broken blood vessels in the area, which can be blue rather than red. If this is the case, it is treatable with lasers with a really good success rate. For complete peace of mind, if possible, it’s always best to get a proper diagnosis from a professional who can look at your skin directly.” – Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A.

    The Ordinary Rosacea Regimen

Are there any specific facials or treatments I can have that could help?

This is a tricky one as there are many things to consider, from the severity of the rosacea to the overall skin condition and whether you’re looking for a more traditional approach or more modern clinical treatments. For my clients, I’m all about the high-tech. I have to take a combined approach. Lasers and IPL give the most consistent results, but you need to be cautious not to overdo it. Always go to someone who is experienced in working with sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.

I also use peels, LED light therapy, and home care products. With so many brands and techniques available for traditional facials, I couldn’t narrow it down to what is good. Instead, I would say avoid brands that are highly fragranced, oily, or high in alcohol. Also, avoid heat like steaming and abrasive treatments like crystal microdermabrasion or scrubs.” Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A

How long should we give products a chance to work to know if they will help?

If you´re not having a bad reaction (allergy, rash), then 6-12 weeks is the minimum time it takes to see benefits from products. It can be a little bit disheartening if you don’t see big changes when you invest in new skincare, but it is important to understand the product is function. Sometimes you don’t get a big wow moment, but if the science is sound, we know that over time, certain ingredients support the skin’s health; they act as preventatives and protectors.” Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A

    Rosacea Q&A

My cheeks become very red and flushed after certain wines and cava. Would this be classed as Rosacea? Or is Rosacea something you have all the time?

Flushing while drinking alcohol (or specific drinks) is definitely an early indicator that you could have mild rosacea. Unless you have it diagnosed by a dermatologist, you can never be 100%. Still, most of my clients do talk about the progression of the condition, from occasional flushing every time they were exposed to the same trigger, for instance, every time they had wine or spicy food.

It could take several years, but they normally felt that more things would trigger the reaction. I wouldn’t massively worry but rather just put a few things in place to strengthen the skin and ideally avoid the triggers you already know.” Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A

Are there any skincare provisos re Soolantra? Anything that shouldn’t be used with it? Eg can it be used with Azeleic acid?.

“I would avoid using an active product at the same time (normally, it is applied once daily); if it is an am application, I would just follow with a light hydrator and SPF. Then, in the pm, you just have to cautiously try products to see if you have a reaction, I wouldn’t go crazy and use too many products or go aggressive with a really strong %, but I’m not aware of anything you have to avoid so shouldn’t be a problem.” Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A

How do you get rid of the blackheads from your nose when the skin is sensitive /dry and is supposed to avoid any harsh treatment or use a hot bath/water to open pores? Does seborrhoeic dermatitis and rosacea relate?

Both conditions are inflammatory, so there will definitely be some crossover. I would say that niacinamide and azelaic acid could be good options for you as they are anti-inflammatory but should also help with texture and pores.” – Debbie Thomas, Rosacea Q&A

Does rosacea ever go away, or is it just something you have to keep under control?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Chronic means long term eg no cure, however as there are lots of factors that can contribute to rosacea flaring up including hormonal, there are times I have seen it go dormant for months and for many years and no recurrence. Managing it takes a 360 approach; getting the right skincare is essential, but diet and lifestyle always have an impact in some way.

    Rosacea Q&A

Do you recommend any diet-related items to complement treatments? Have read some interesting literature on the gut-skin connection.

I’m not a nutritionist, so I won’t go into huge detail. But in short, yes, I do think diet matters, and gut health is very important. In terms of what to eat more of its green veg all the way as they tend to be the most anti-inflammatory. I also love turmeric for the same reason, drink water and avoid (reduce) foods that cause inflammation and mucus buildup in the body, these tend to be animal-based foods, sugars and for many gluten.

I have always blushed easily, and with exercise, my face has almost plummed purple, and I have a burning feeling for hours afterwards. Is this a form of Rosacea?

It sounds very likely that you have rosacea. You have several of the common symptoms.

Are there some preventative things you can do if you don’t suffer to ensure you don’t get Rosacea in later years?

Some people never get it. If you think you may be genetically predisposed but don’t have current symptoms, it is about weighing up what skin concerns you do have with maintaining healthy skin. SPF is key regardless of skin concern, but the DNA damage from UV rays weakens skin, making it more prone to inflammatory conditions.

A good antioxidant for the same reason, it helps protect against the weakening oxidative stress from the sun, pollution, etc. Then, the peptides are strengthened and repaired. Avoid things that make you flush or go red for prolonged periods (saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, etc).

Is Rosacea more common in men? I know more men with it than women. Could that mean there is a hormonal link?

Strangely enough, it’s the other way around. However, women tend to get/start with milder versions which are often not diagnosed. Whereas men tend to get the more severe so more obvious form.

    Rosacea Q&A

What is the difference between rosacea and couperose?

Couperose is the term to describe the skin when there are also textural changes like enlarged pores; it also appears more oily or waxy than a traditional rosacea skin.” – Debbie Thomas

Can you have rosacea at a younger age? I’ve read that it typically appears after 30?

Yes, rosacea can affect any age. It is just much more common over the age of 35“.

More Questions From The Rosacea Q&A

I’m 28 and have had redness on my cheeks, the sides of my nose, between my brows and under my mouth since my teens. It flares up from temperature changes (sauna, hot shower etc), alcohol and stress.

My first bit of advice is annoying (sorry), but you need to try a steer clear of the things that flare your skin up. This is a progressive condition, and the more often it flares up, the quicker it progresses, this is because the intense flushing you get is inflammation and inflammation weakens the skin (just a little each time).

“Your reaction to the azelaic acid may be because your skin is too compromised at the moment, so it is better to calm and restore. Lipids and anti-inflammatory products will help. You could also look at a milder azelaic acid product to start. I would consider an antioxidant and niacinamide as well. It is hard with these types of akin conditions because everyone needs something a little different. You also have the option of prescription medication or creams from a Dermatologist.

Are acids and retinol a no-no with rosacea?

Not at all, but you do need to be more cautious and slowly add them in. Also, start with milder formulations so you can test your skin’s tolerance. There will be cases where the skin is too compromised (sensitive and weakened). Then, you may have to spend time repairing and calming the skin before considering any stronger actives.

Would you have any suggestions for the treatment of rosacea following Chemo treatment? My face is a constant red blotchy colour, and I have no idea where to start with it, besides the rosacea it is in very good condition.

Firstly, I hope you now have the all-clear. So things to look at are first, are the blotches permanent (always there) if you press them, do they fade (blanch), and then come back quickly? If this is the case, it would be that you have a matting of tiny broken veins. The only way to treat these would be with laser or IPL (normally not an issue, but check with your doctor regarding timings). If it is the more traditional rosacea symptoms, then start with a calming product like NIOD´s MG, Modulating Glucosides, use ceramide-based products but not too rich, Cerave do a simple cleanser and moisturising lotion.

Ceramides repair the barrier function of the skin, which is the uppermost layer that protects the deeper living layers. When your barrier is not working well, more irritants can get in, and good things like moisture evaporate out. Peptides are also a good addition as they help strengthen the skin overall, and I recommend everyone use an antioxidant like vitamin C, which also protects and strengthens. Some people can find vitamin C irritating, so you can use another antioxidant if you need to. There are also prescription medications available from a dermatologist that can help. These can be used alongside your existing regime.

More Questions From The Rosacea Q&A

I have Finacea. Any suggestions for other skincare products to use with this? How long do I need to use the Finacea until I can try to layer other activities, too?

Hi, so you are basically using prescription-strength Azelaic acid. So to start, I would be looking to add in some protective and restorative ingredients like lipids (found in NIOD MG) if your skin is tolerating the Finacea well, then I would start adding other products within 2-4 weeks. My clients play around with their regime until it suits their needs. Eg they may only use Finacea at night so they can use antioxidants, niacinamide and SPF during the day.

The most important factor is to be constant with your products; if you feel like the rosacea gets under control, don’t jump ship with products (or your main ingredients). However, you could look at reducing Finacea to every second or third night, giving you the opportunity to use another product on those nights. Then, if you get a flare-up, you can simply increase the Finacea again. – Debbie Thomas Q&A

Can I use metronidazole (for rosacea) with other skincare products (like niacinamide, glycolic acid, retinol, vitamin C suspension) for other skin concerns (ageing, acne scarring, textural issues)?

Thank you! Yes, you can but don’t throw everything on at once though serums can go on first, wait 10-15 mins then apply Metronidazole. It is antibacterial so shouldn’t interfere with other products. In the am make sure to apply SPF.” – Debbie Thomas

The Ordinary Step by Step. How to use The Ordinary is a common question in the Facebook Group, and it must seem complicated for anyone completely new to skincare. Where do you start with The Ordinary? How do I find out what skin type I have? Which Ordinary products do I use? How do I build a regimen? In which order do I apply the products? Are there any skincare routines I can buy?

Well, I have you covered! Here is a quick step-by-step how-to guide to The Ordinary with links directing you to all the pages you need. You can also take the Skin Questionaire on The Ordinary website and create your skincare routine.

Start Fresh with a Clean Face

Begin by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and prepare your skin for the upcoming products. You can find all THE ORDINARY & NIOD CLEANSERS here.

Know Your Skin Type and Concerns

Identify your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive) and specific concerns (acne, fine lines, uneven tone) to create your routine. You may find this page helpful to help decide your SKIN TYPE.

    Masques

Apply masques as per the instructions to a clean, dry face. Avoid the eye area when applying and rinsing off. Always check conflicts.

    Applying Your Serums & Creams

When applying The Ordinary serums, you need 2 or 3 drops. Put the drops in the palm of your hand and massage or pat into your skin. If you feel you need more, use more. You need a small, pea-sized amount of creams, but once again, if your skin needs more, apply more.

Waiting Time Before Apply The Next Serum

Once you have applied your serum, there´s no set time to wait. Just make sure it has been absorbed before you apply your next serum. If you find you have “bits” or “pilling”, this could be because you have used too much product. Read all about Skincare Pilling.

    Targeted Treatments Serums and Acids

Introduce serums and acids based on your skin concerns. Apply them sparingly, focusing on specific areas or concerns. Acids will go directly after cleansing, followed by your other serums. The Ordinary recommends no more than 3 serums in a routine. You can find all the products listed by SKIN CONCERNS here. You may also find THE ORDINARY REGIMENS helpful too.

Which Order To Apply Ordinary Products?

The Ordinary products come in different solutions: water-based, anhydrous, oil, suspension, emulsion, and powder. These should be applied in a certain order, usually from the clearest/lightest to the thickest/opaque products. You can find a SKINCARE PRODUCT LAYER CHART here with a list of all the products and which solutions they are.

Special Care for Eyes and Spots

If using eye serums or spot treatments, some people apply directly after cleansing, some after one water-based product and some after all water-based products but before heavier solutions like anhydrous oils or creams. You can find all THE ORDINARY & NIOD EYE PRODUCTS here.

    Hydration Boost with Moisturizers

Seal in the benefits with one of The Ordinary moisturizers. Please choose a product that suits your skin’s hydration needs, whether a lighter formula or something richer. There are 3 THE ORDINARY MOISTURIZERS to choose from. You could also look at NIOD HV.

    Daily Sunscreen (Morning Routine)

In the morning, finish your routine with an SPF. Search #spf in the Facebook Group if you’re stuck for ideas.

    Adapt your routine for Nighttime.

In the evening, adjust your routine by focusing on hydration and repair. You can use the products that are for PM use only, particularly ACIDS & RETINOIDS. You may use products that conflict with those you use in the morning. Pay attention to how your skin is. You may find conflicting products may be better on alternate days. You may find THE ORDINARY CONFLICTS CHART useful.

    Consistency is Key

Stick to your routine consistently to allow the products to work together. Unless you are consistent, you will not know if a product is working. Try not to get too carried away when buying The Ordinary. I recommend purchasing a complete skincare regimen and slowly introducing other products later on. You can find lots of skincare REGIMENS here.

Listen to Your Skin and Adapt

Please pay attention to how your skin responds and be open to adapting your routine based on its evolving needs. You know your skin better than anyone, and if something isn´t working or is irritating, stop using it. We all have different skin, and what works for one person may not work for you. Don´t be surprised if something everyone loves breaks your skin out. Be open to changing your regimen.

Stuck for Christmas gift ideas or little stocking fillers! Don´t worry, I have you covered!. On this page, you can find my most popular products to buy people. The Ordinary & NIOD Gift Sets, The Ordinary products under 10$, new skincare collections and E-Gift Cards.

    Gifting The Ordinary

If I am totally stuck, I generally buy these 3 products or a gift set or an E-Gift Card.

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser, Multi-Peptide Serum + HA, Natural Moisturizing Factors are just some of The Ordinary Products I have purchased for people if I wasn’t sure about their skin type. I also love to send The Ordinary & NIOD E-Gift Card if I´m unsure what someone would like, and The Daily Set is an excellent set for anyone.

    Why these 3 products?

Glucoside Foaming Cleanser – It’s an easy cleanser to use. It leaves the skin feeling fresh and suitable for all skin types.

Multi-Peptide Serum + HA is a great all-round product that targets many skin concerns and is perfect for all skin types.

Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA – this is just such a great moisturizer; there is nothing not to like.

These 3 products can be used in the morning and evening, and it’s a simple routine for anyone.

There are a lot of products to choose from. You could take one or two products from each category to cover everything, but you would need to check The Ordinary Conflicts and ensure the person you are buying understands which products you can and cannot mix and how to layer.

Out of these, I would probably choose Glucoside Foaming Cleanser, Multi-Peptide Serum + HA, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Pycnogenol, Glycolic Acid, Gran Active Retinoid, Squalane Oil, Natural Moisturising Factors + HA.

    The Ordinary Stocking Fillers

If you are looking for great stocking fillers, look at all these The Ordinary Products under 10$. With the Slowvember sale, these products are now 7.70$ or less. There´s now 36 products under 10$ at the moment with 23% off. It´s a great time to stock up.

    The Ordinary Gift Sets

There are so many gift sets to choose from. There is something for everyone, no matter their age or gender.

    The Ordinary Collections

November 3rd 2023, The Ordinary released new collections. These are great little skincare routines to target different skin concerns. You can buy the products individually or buy together and save 5% plus 23% whilst Slowvember is on. Please note that these are not in a gift box.

    The Ordinary For Christmas Gifts

I can spend weeks deciding what to buy someone for Christmas or Birthdays. I find buying for older teens particularly hard, especially when you want something under 30$/40$. You really don´t get much for your money when looking at brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Urban Decay etc. Meanwhile, with The Ordinary, you can buy quite a few products.

Why does The Ordinary make great Christmas gifts?

The Ordinary is brilliant because it appeals to everyone of all genders and ages. You can buy a few individual products and box them up or buy one of the numerous gift sets The Ordinary available. The Daily Set is an excellent choice for someone new to skincare, or the Future Set for someone with a little more experience. If someone is really into their Lashes & Brows, you could buy the new Duo Lash & Brow Serum Set.

The Ordinary product I want is out of stock.

Stock is generally quite low after Black Friday, which is why it´s a perfect time to stock up on gifts when the sale is on. If something is out of stock, make sure you sign up for notifications.

The Ordinary E-Gift Cards for Christmas

If you do not know which products to buy, you can buy The Ordinary or NIOD E-Gift Card. Read all the terms and conditions because this is only available for some countries.
